Two members of the Auburn Ski Club Snowboard team have been selected by the U. S. Ski and Snowboard Association to attend a pre-Olympic World Cup. The event will be held in Sochi, site of next year’s 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
ASC Snowboarders Ryan Stassel, Easton Gilman and Karly Shorr competed in the first ever FIS slopestyle World Cup held at Copper Mt. Colorado in early December. At the competition Stassel and Shorr earned invites to Russia for a World Cup event. Stassel and Gilman were 2 of 16 American men in a field of 130 riders from 31 different nations. In the slopestyle event Ryan Stassel was 21st overall, 5th in his heat, and 5th highest placing American, while Easton Gilman was 25th overall, 6th in his heat, and the 6th highest placing American. Ryan Stassel’s Colorado results also gained him an invite to the FIS World Championships in Stoneham, Canada where he was the highest American placing 7th overall.
Karly Shorr was one of eight American women competing against 70 different riders from 29 nations. Karly had an incredible performance, with an 11th overall, 5th in her heat and was the 2nd highest finishing American woman.
The Sochi World Cup Slopestyle event will be held on the same venue where the 2014 Winter Olympics will debut Slopestyle as a medal event. Ryan Stassel and Karly Shorr are now hopefuls for the 2014 US Snowboard Olympic team.
