Nordic News – Oct 2012

The nordic program is transitioning from a fun filled summer to focusing on winter programs and events.

Summer Training
Over the summer we had about 50 young nordic athletes training 2-5 times a week focussing on building an endurance and strength base for the upcoming season. “The younger kids get fitter and better without even noticing” says Club Head Coach Ben Grasseschi “We take them on various adventures on foot and by bike as well as more ‘serious’ specific workouts on rollerskis and sessions with technque focus”.  The older juniors put in more miles with 2-3 hr roller ski/ running/biking sessions and specific technique and strength workouts.

Fundraising
The team also participated in the various Club fundraising events.  The Truckee 4th July firecracker Mile, The Squaw Mountain Run and The Donner Summit Bike Time Trial.

Biathlon
The Biathlon program had weekly practices and hosted The National Summer Biathlon Championships and The Chuck Lyda Memorial Biathlon Race.  The Club was delighted to be awarded a grant from The 10th Mountain Division Descendants Foundation to help us build a new, year round range.  We are still trying to raise another $25,000+ from other foundations and private donar to do the necessary earthworks to complete the project.

Looking ahead to winter
Winter looks full and exciting as usual.  Masters and Youth programs will kick off in December, as will the winter race schedule.  We will be hosting 3 USSA races thuis season as well as the usual citizen, high school and biathlon races.  The exciting news on the race calenar is that the USSA SuperTour Finals and National 30/50km champs will be coming to our region in April.  Most of the events will be held at Tahoe Donner xc – but ASC will play a big role in tiing and providing race crew.  – see the Far West website  for more details and sponsorship opportunities

We are looking to grow ASC membership this year – so we have introduced a club wide “refer a friend” program which offes you a discount on your dues if you recruit a friend or family to one of our pograms – or to join and buy a season trail pass.  details can be found on the website – or ask at the TC office.
