The ASC Training Center’s Comp and Devo Teams are fun-filled and challenging programs directed toward dedicated skiers ages 12-19 who are looking to progress their ski skills and fitness for Nordic racing.
2017-18 Comp & Devo Team Program Intro
Summer & Year-Round team registration begins online May 1st!
Registration buttons will appear on this page and our home page.
Both teams have a winter only, summer only and year round option. There is a cost savings in choosing the year round option, and also a benefit to the athlete. Our athletes rise to the top of the Far West Division and do extremely well regionally and nationally at the highest competition levels. We consistently qualify more athletes for the Far West Junior National team than any other regional program.
ASC Training Center hosts four of the major Far West Nordic qualifying races each season on the Comp/Devo Team’s home trails; (Tahoe Mtn. Sports Holiday Sprints, Paco’s Fun Freestyle, Snowshoe Thompson Classic and the President’s Cup Freestyle), as well as several major Biathlon competitions. Our 25+km trail system features FIS homologated 5km, 2.5km and 1.2km courses.
As the top training and racing venue in the western U.S., we have hosted the XC Junior Nationals four times, the USSA Supertour twice, the NCAA Nationals and the US Biathlon Nationals. Our location on Donner Summit also means our teams are the first ones on the snow at the beginning of the season and the last ones off in the Spring!
Additionally, our mission as a non-profit training facility is to keep costs affordable for our athletes. In 2018, we’ll be celebrating our 90th year of winter sports excellence. We’ve been raising champions at Auburn Ski Club since 1928!
Comp Team (ages 14-19)
The ASC Training Center Competition Ski Team is a part of Far West Nordic’s racing division and is open to athletes ages 14 to 19 (age groups U16, U18, and U20), who are interested in high level cross-country skiing. This program is designed to turn proficient skiers into competitive racers. Our many focuses include fitness and training, technique development and participation in local, regional, and national level racing. (We have lots of fun as well!) We aim to prepare athletes for competition at the Junior National level and foster a life-long interest in the sport. We believe that training is fundamental to success in winter racing, and have programs to help athletes reach their goals.

Devo Team (ages 12-15)
Athletes participate in exciting activities that lead into successful skiing and racing as the winter approaches. We will hike to the summits of mountains, roller ski, mountain bike, and Nordic bound to build ski-specific strength. Once the snow falls, training sessions switch to on-snow workouts designed to maximize each athlete’s potential. Coaches provide race day waxing and pre-race advice to the athlete to help them to perform at the highest level. We’ll have the opportunity to train with other regional ski clubs and build friendships and good-natured rivalries with fellow skiers. Experienced coaches educate the athletes in physiology relevant to skiing, give technique instruction for efficient movement on snow, and help athletes achieve their personal skiing goals.

Comp Devo “Need to Know” Guide
Junior National Championships:
A perennial goal of the Comp team is to qualify for and attend the USSA Junior National Championships. Comp team members should familiarize themselves with “JN” qualification standards.
We are, of course, supportive of a wide range of goals in skiing, and will help guide each athlete to progress in the sport. ASC is highly supportive of high school skiing goals as well.
Far West U14 Championships:
A big goal of our Devo skiers is to race locally in the region and attend at least one race-trip per year. We have several trips, training camps, and races available for Devo skiers to test the waters of competition and training, so that they can continue in their development to being the best racers they can be. Our older Devo skiers often chase points and competitions in the Far West U14 Cup and Championships, but we are highly supportive of middle-school skiing goals as well.
ASC Comp and Devo will be participating in various training camps this season. Some camps we will be running ourselves, and some we will be participating in as a part of our larger Far West regional camps (these are not run through ASC, but often we encourage our athletes and coaches to attend). Stay tuned for more info!
Fundraising & Volunteerism
ASC Comp and Devo program dues are directly subsidized by fundraising efforts. Participation by athletes and volunteerism from parents is a required and necessary component of team involvement. Fundraisers help keep our overall program costs affordable. Volunteerism at our many events keeps the ASC Training Center and its teams running! Stay tuned for a complete list of opportunities coming soon!

Racing Licenses and other Memberships:
ASC Comp level skiers with aspirations of qualifying for Junior Nationals need to have a USSA Competitor Membership ($95) with Far West and Auburn Ski Club designated as your division and club affiliation. They also need to hold a Far West Junior Racing Membership ($30) or Family Membership. Contact Coach Gus Johnson (email@example.com) if you have questions. USSA Membership: http://my.ussa.org/membership/start Far West Nordic Membership: http://farwestnordic.org/contact-us/forms/farwest-nordic-online-membership-form/
ASC Devo level skiers should consider becoming members of Far West Nordic, our regional umbrella organization. Far West supports, promotes, and develops nordic skiing projects in our area, offers camps and trips for Juniors to allows them to develop their skiing. A Far West membership is required for scoring/points towards the Far West U14 Cup or making the Junior National team when devo skiers become comp skiers, so it’s good to start thinking in that direction. With lots of activities, events and member benefits, it is fun be a part of the Far West community.
